Throughout history, the sea has commanded the culture, economy and politics of Spain.
More than that, it has commanded the hearts of its residents and for many has played an important part in their faith. For decades, Spaniards have united to honour the Virgin of Mount Carmel on July 16; today, the celebration continues.
This Saint is believed to be one of the invocations of the Virgin Mary and in Spain, has been the proclaimed Patron Saint of sailors since 1901. According to Carmelite traditions, her image appeared to the sailor, San Simon Stock on July 16, 1251.
Today, towns across the Valencian Community continue to mark this day to celebrate their faith and regard for the sea. Calpe is one of the towns in which the festivity never goes unnoticed.
Calpe´s Fishermen´s Guild, founded in 1924, has its headquarters on the Avenida Virgen del Carmen with approximately 500 members.
This year, the local community will unite on July 16, starting the day with a solemn mass, followed by a procession in honour of the Virgin of Mount Carmel and the setting of a crown of flowers into the sea in memory of those deceased by shipwreck.
