From the classic Calle Larios Christmas light show, where the heavenly angels twinkle to the sounds of Christmas carols, to the light show in the Historical Botanical Garden-La Concepción, this year we can also see a Lantern Festival in the Parque del Oeste.
There is such a wide selection to choose from in Malaga, but where can you buy tickets? How much are they? And, when are they on?
In Calle Larios, you can see them for free daily at 6.30pm, 8pm, and 10pm, except Christmas Eve. This year, Malaga City is illuminating 500 streets from 6.30 every day. The cathedral will be video-mapped with light show projections. The shows are at 7pm, 8.30pm, and 10pm, every day from December 1 to January 4.
There’s the light and sound show at the La Concepción Historic Botanic Garden called ‘Illusion’. Christmas has many faces, but a single heart will surprise children, but also the elderly. There will be seven worlds in the light exhibition: the house of the Queen of the Elves; the Polar Express station; Grinch’s lair; the Magic Forest of the Elves; Santa Claus’ mansion; chimney forest; and the Lighthouse of Illusion. It is on until January 6, €15.50 and €11.50 for kids at the gates. The park has a maximum capacity of 400 people.
From Christmas to Chinese new year
And then there’s the Parque del Oeste. This is the first year of this Lantern Festival. It will be in Malaga until February 15 and has been created to honour the ancient culture and bring the people of Malaga closer to the celebrations of the Chinese New Year.
A total of 600 lanterns and 4,000 light points decorate the central area of Parque del Oeste. 45.5 percent of the Parque del Oeste will remain closed for five months, something that local residents are protesting about as the park is being privatised. But the light show is good. Times are 6pm, 9.15pm, 8.30pm and 9.45pm. Tickets are available from El Corte Ingles for €12.
