Restoration work of the landmark fountains in Italy’s iconic capital city has finally been completed.

The three impressive fountains – one in front of the Pantheon and two in Piazza Navona, both in Rome s city centre, have been proudly restored to their former glory ahead of time before the Vatican’s Jubilee Year in 2025.

This comes as welcome news for tourists and residents alike, as there has been some disruption this year to sightseeing options when work was also carried out on the world-famous Trevi Fountain. Now, three of the other most famous fountains are back to business and ready to be admired by tourists following a period of renovation work.

Water switched back on in major fountain in front of Pantheon, Rome

Work to the fountains began in April and was overseen by Rome s superintendence as part of the Caput Mundi conservation scheme of Jubilee-related projects funded by Italy s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). On Wednesday November 27, the water was switched back on at the 16th Century fountain in Piazza della Rotonda, with the Pantheon reigning proudly in the background. Rome’s mayor, Roberto Gualtieri Mayor, who had had the pleasure of switching on the water at the fountain, highlighted the fact that work completed had not been maintenance, but rather a restoration project as the monument had not undergone any major upkeep since 1992. Gualtieri commented on the history of the fountain, which had begun in 1575 under Leonardo Sormani who was being guided by the designs of Giacomo dell Porta.

The other two historic fountains to be unveiled stand at either end of Piazza Navona: the Fountain of Neptune and the Fountain of the Moor. The three fountains will be followed by a fourth – hopefully by December 20 – when restoration work is completed. The fourth corresponds to the central fountain in the piazza, known as the Fountain of the Four Rivers and was designed by Bernini in the 17th Century.

Rome has entered the season of reopenings ahead of the Jubilee Year

For Rome—a city defined by its iconic monuments and the rich legacies they embody—preserving access to these masterpieces for both visitors and residents is of paramount importance. The early completion of the restoration work is thrilling news, bringing the city one step closer to fully showcasing the breathtaking panorama that is Rome. About the opening, Gualtieri said: We are very happy because we are starting to remove the barriers and return these monuments to their beauty, to the city and to the world. He added that Rome had entered the season of reopenings a year or more after the onset of major Jubilee projects that have proved to be a challenging time for the city’s residents and a frustrating reality for tourists.

The upcoming Jubilee Year is held every quarter-century. It is anticipated that around 32 million pilgrims and tourists will come to the Eternal City to celebrate it.
