The idyllic region of Canillas de Aceituno fears being taken over by landfill site

Residents in the area of Canillas de Aceituno in the Axarquía have been taking a stand in opposition to plans for a recycling and landfill centre.
They are taking action as part of the “Protect Canillas de Aceituno” ( Proteja Canillas de Aceituno ) group to try to stop the Andalucían regional government in its tracks.
New plant will overtake a zone of natural beauty in Canillas de Aceituno
Authorities have planned to install the facility for the collection and recycling of hazardous waste in the area Lomilleja de Mingana, Cardal and Loma Cuchiche in Canillas de Aceituno since 2019. It would mean multiple zones for processing of metals, plastics, electrics and general waste and the valley would be overtaken by a large landfill area containing refuse from Málaga province. However, on November 7, the Junta de Andalucía opened the project to the public offering the opportunity for objections.
Recycling plant objections have gathered well over 500 signatures
Residents have their backs up claiming it would cause massive destruction to the countryside and wildlife. There are also concerns regarding industrial waste trucks obstructing the narrow, windy roads. Via social media, website campaigning and petitions, they have totted up over 600 digital signatures, many paper signatures and its not stopping.
Canillas de Aceituno worries recycling plant would damage tourism
The construction plans are a kick in the teeth for a town so invested in improving its tourism repertoire with El Saltillo suspension bridge attracting many visitors. Canillas de Aceituno is considered a hidden gem thanks to its natural beauty and would seem an unsuitable choice for a landfill site.
