Nerja has been collaborating in the battle against gender violence to mark the International Day against violence against women.
To commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which took place yesterday, November 25, Nerja has ratified its commitment to the cause in a very special manifesto.
Local manifesto was compiled and read aloud at Nerja Town Hall
The local manifesto which had been drawn up conscientiously to reflect changing times and the current situation regarding gender violence in Spain was read allowed in Nerja’s Town Hall. It remembered the 41 women and 8 minors who died at the hands of gender violence this year alone.
Mayor José Alberto Armijo: “This violence has no place in our society.”
Mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, has stressed the importance of working collectively to eradicate gender violence, stating that “this violence has no place in our society.” He highlighted the importance of creating a society where women and men can live with equality, security and respect.
Women’s associations in collaboration with the Municipal Women’s Information Centre organised a moving tribute to victims of gender violence who were named and flowers and toys were placed in the Cerote tree on the Balcon de Europa in their memory.
Purple illuminations and ribbons were a symbol against gender violence
Rather than being a sad reflection on a society still scourged by sexist violence, the day served as a reaffirmation that things are changing and that Spain will not stand for injustice. Many cities, towns and villages nationwide symbolised their solidarity through purple illuminations on famous landmarks or through distributing purple ribbons as a poignant reminder of the cause.
