Seafood is still a very important part of the Norwegian economy and the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC) is targeting Vietnam as a major new outlet for its product.

It signed a strategic partnership document with Golden Gate Group (GGG), one of Vietnam’s top food and beverage chains, on November 27 and has recently launched the Norwegian Salmon Academy in Ho Chi Minh City.

Norwegian Seafood Council and Vietnamese food chain join forces to open second Norwegian Salmon Academy

By joining forces with GGG, NSC aims to increase the presence of Norwegian seafood in Vietnam, providing high-quality options for consumers while sharing best practices in sustainability and seafood handling.

Vietnam does produce a large volume of seafood, especially crustacea, but with a growing economy and a strong tourist market it also has need to import some high quality seafood for this expanding market.

This is borne out by the fact that according to NSC’s consumer research, 84 per cent of Vietnamese shoppers consider the country of origin a critical factor when purchasing seafood like salmon which highlights the success of NSC’s efforts to introduce responsibly sourced Norwegian seafood to Vietnam.

Vietnam is now fifth fastest-growing market for Norwegian seafood globally

As one of the NSC’s critical Southeast Asian markets, Vietnam is home to a growing consumer base that values high-quality, sustainably sourced seafood. NSC’s approach to this growing market has focused on fostering long-term partnerships with local players, emphasising mutual growth through knowledge exchange, skill enhancement, and elevated industry standards.

The Norwegian Salmon Academy which opened first in Hanoi confirms the NSC commitment to developing local culinary talent and offers specialised training for chefs, culinary professionals, and retail staff, equipping them with skills to handle, prepare, and sell Norwegian salmon.

Thanks to all of its activities NSC has confirmed that Vietnam has emerged as the fifth fastest-growing market for Norwegian seafood globally.
