Feeling festive yet? As Christmas fast approaches us, cities and towns across Spain are preparing to dazzle locals and visitors with their annual switch-on of dazzling and charming Christmas lights.

The Inauguration Gala in Mojacar will start with an Oniria show at 18:30pm, followed by the switching on of the Christmas lights at 19:00pm. Then there will be a Christmas zambomba concert.

Under the theme ‘Almería es mágica en Navidad’(Almería is magical at Christmas), Almeria city will light up and there will be a spectacular 12-metre high tunnel in the Plaza de la Catedral, offering a unique light and sound show. There will also be the well-known ice rink and Christmas Market to look forward to on Avenida Federico García Lorca. The streets of Almeria will be adorned with illuminated motifs, including an 18-metre fir tree, almond trees, and images of the Three Wise Men.

Vélez-Málaga will transform into a festive wonderland with a nativity scene at City Hall, a Christmas market, and parades. At 8:00pm, traditional carols will echo through Plaza de la Constitución with a performance by the Ortigosa Brothers.

Altea will kick off Christmas with a Candy Workshop followed by carol singing by elderly locals. Warm hot chocolate will be served, and the Casa de Cultura nativity scene will be open for visits from 2 December. A bustling Christmas market runs from 6 to 8 December.

This year, Alicante’s lights will shine with nearly 2.5 million energy-saving LED lights across 120 streets. Highlights include a giant three-dimensional Christmas tree on Avenida de la Constitución and a lighted ball and bell at Plaza Montañeta and Ruperto Chapí. Evening light shows will run until midnight.

This year’s display promises a delightful experience with energy-efficient LED lights adorning key locations. The decorations will include stunning arches, illuminated trees, and traditional festive motifs, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for locals and visitors alike. The highlight of the evening will be the illumination of central areas. Visitors can also look forward to enjoying traditional Christmas treats, such as roasted chestnuts, adding a cosy and nostalgic touch to the celebrations.

There will be 17 wooden cabins at the Fuengirola Christmas Market this year. Every Saturday, families and children will be able to enjoy the popular ‘nevada’ fake snow.

Benalmádena: Friday, November 29 at Plaza 3 Culturas, 6:00pm plus Plaza Solymar, 7:00pm

Malaga Christmas lights 2024

In Málaga, the famous Calle Larios will showcase 16 celestial angels with nightly light and sound shows at 6:30pm, 8:00pm and 10:00pm. Lights will stay on until 6am on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

For the first time, Cartagena will illuminate the city centre and surrounding areas simultaneously. Over 750 decorations, including sparkling almond branches and a 20-metre Christmas tree at Town Hall Square, will transform the city into a festive forest.

Palma’s lights have already been switched on and will remain on throughout the festive season. The display boats over 400 kilometres of garlands and three towering Christmas trees. This year’s event featured parades and theatrical performances inspired by characters from other planets, adding a unique twist to the festivities.

Tips for enjoying the Christmas lights in Spain

Try to arrive in good time. Popular events like those in Málaga’s Calle Larios can draw large crowds. Check local schedules as some streets may close for the festivities. Wear comfy shoes and light layers.

Spain’s Christmas light displays are more than just decorations – they’re a celebration of community, tradition, and holiday spirit.
