Whiskey, stout and even a video game manufacturer have taken a stand by removing sales or blocking content after Irish mixed martial arts and boxer, Conor McGregor was sentenced for rape on Friday.
Irish professional mixed martial artist and professional boxer, Conor McGregor was sentenced on Friday by a jury in the High Court for the rape of Dublin woman, Nikita Hand in a Dublin hotel in December 2018. Now, he is paying the price, as not only has he paid thousands in compensation, but his Proper No.Twelve Irish whiskey brand that he co-founded will be removed from the shelves and the company will no longer be using his name and face for their branding. Proximo Spirits bought Proper No.twelve Irish Whiskey from Mr McGregor and his business partners in 2021 and had been the full owner ever since, as revealed in a statement by the company. They confirmed: Going forward, we do not plan to use Mr McGregor s name and likeness in the marketing of the brand. Despite not owning the Brand, McConor’s face and name had been used to promote it since 2021. However, since fresh sentencing, even the whiskey s official website appears to have been taken down.
Supermarkets like Tesco have removed sales of McGregor s whiskey
Supermarket chains have followed suit with the move and refuse to stock the products so closely linked to the boxer since the sentence was made. Musgrave, operator of Supervalu, Centra and Daybreak supermarkets in the UK and Mace in Northern Ireland has confirmed that these products are no longer available to our store network. Tesco was another supermarket to take a stand, also refusing to stock products linked to McGregor, including his newest alcoholic brainchild, Forged Irish Stout.
Distributor BWG who dispatches to over 1,000 stores cancels stocks
BWG Foods added to the list of objecting store distributors. It currently dispatches to over 1,000 Spar, Eurospar, Mace, Londis and XL Stores across Ireland, which means that impacts will be heavily felt. Cork-based Barry Group, who own Costcutter and Carry Out retail outlets, has taken the decision to stop selling Forged Stout and Proper No Twelve in its network of stores. In a statement, it said: This action reflects our commitment to maintaining a retail environment that resonates with the values of our customers and partners.
Two airports remove Proper No Twelve whiskey and Forged Irish Stout
Aside from major supermarkets, Cork and Dublin airports two of the most important across the country have removed the sale of Proper No Twelve whiskey and Forged Irish Stout from their Duty Free stores and bars.
Aside from alcohol, McGregor had also cooperated with game developer IO Interactive, makers of a video game called Hitman. This too will block any further collaboration with the mixed martial arts celebrity. In a further blow, they said: “We will begin removing all content featuring Mr. McGregor from our storefronts starting today.
