Major television star, Michael Barrymore has upped sticks for a ‘new life’ in Spain according to reports.

The 72-year-old celebrity admits he would like to quit the UK permanently, particularly after the death of Stuart Lubbock in his swimming pool and wants to start a fresh chapter.

Barrymore starts new life in Spain to move on from Lubbock tragedy

Following years of interrogation and unanswered questions, it has come as no surprise that Barrymore wishes to leave his old life behind and start afresh. And what could be better than a new pad in sunny Spain? The mystery death of Stuart Lubbock in 2001 left the star shaken for many years and now he has decided to put his huge 967 square foot flat on the market, before heading to the Mediterranean and trying to put the past behind him.

The entertainer was one of TV’s biggest names and seemed to be living a private life away from scrutiny. This was until, sadly, tragedy struck in 2001, where Stuart Lubbock was found in a pool at Barrymore’s home in Roydon, Essex and later died at Harlow s Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Stuart Lubbock was found floating in Barrymore s pool in 2001

Details around Lubbock’s death still remain shady. He had been one of a group of people to go back to Barrymore’s massive home following a night-out in Harlow on March 31 2001. However, the night ended in chaos as not only was he found floating and unconscious, but post-mortem examinations revealed he had been the victim of “horrific” injuries including sexual assault. He had significant amounts of alcohol, ecstasy and cocaine in his bloodstream and was believed to have drowned, but pathological examinations weren’t as clearcut.

Essex Police have not given up on the 2001 death of Stuart Lubbock

Since then, Essex Police have not given up on the task of routing for answers and explanations. They said: As we have continually stated over the last 20 years we believe someone, or some people, at that party know what happened. Barrymore had always supported the case in their investigations, telling Good Morning Britain in 2020 that he would like a new Police force controlling a fresh investigation.

Barrymore has struggled to move on as questions remain unanswered

Amid such turmoil, it has not been an unexpected move by Barrymore to want “out” of the UK. Barrymore has always declared his innocence and denied having had any contact with guests at the party since the tragedy occurred. Barrymore went on to say: The wall of silence is because they don t know [what happened]. I do believe that. He added: I ve got nothing to hide. I ve never had anything to hide. I ve got every right to go out and work in the business I ve worked in without being kicked in the teeth just because I m back on the telly. Since then, no one has ever been charged in connection with the death.

Barrymore spotted exploring the area in El Papiol, close to Barcelona

Recent images of Barrymore have shown him testing out life in El Papiol, close to Barcelona with a male friend and his beloved dog, Lara. He confesses to having felt homesick at first, but with having adopted a routine that he is now settling and exploring the area.

Barrymore was particularly prominent on the television in the 1980’s and 1990’s in shows including Strike It Lucky, My Kind Of People and Kids Do the Funniest Things. He came out as gay in 1995, left his wife and suffered some alcohol and drug addictions before receiving rehab treatment. He now hopes his new life in Spain will be the emotional and social remedy he needs to enjoy his mature years.
