The tables have turned in what was predicted to be a year of water restrictions thanks to recent heavy rainfall and the drought-stricken Málaga province reservoir, gaining 50 pr cent in a week.
La Viñuela in the Axarquía currently holds three times more water than last year – excellent news for agriculture and of course, for residents.
La Viñuela reservoir is in much better position than last year
Looking back to a grim picture last year where the Government had to install pumps to extract remaining resources, this year is painting a more promising picture. La Viñuela reservoir in the Axarquía area, east of Malaga province has been a living testimony to the province s drought for almost six years. It has not fully recuperated but is in a far better position than last year and has undergone a dramatic change since the DANA.
Highest levels seen at La Viñuela reservoir, overtaking La Concepción
Rainfall and flooding was particularly pertinent in the Axarquía with both rivers Vélez and Benamargosa – bursting their banks and prompting the evacuation of local residents. The silver lining is that la Viñuela is benefiting from rainfall and runoff water boosting water levels to 36 hm3m almost overtaking La Concepción (between Marbella and Iztán), the record water storer for Málaga province. La Viñuela – the largest reservoir in the province – is reaching the highest levels seen in years, albeit not at full capacity. Previously, water for agriculture was being imported but since the two consecutive DANAs, the province’s reservoirs have recuperated from the summer and are at 28 per cent of their capacity.
