Several villages across the Axarquia region which were left disconnected from water supply after the DANA flooding have finally recuperated full access to mains water.

Almost 10 days after the torrential downpours in Málaga provoked by the DANA, the villages of Almáchar, El Borge and Cútar in the Axarquía have finally had something to celebrate when many houses were reconnected to mains water.

Water pipes were destroyed and Benamargosa river burst its banks

The excessive rainfall which savagely destroyed infrastructures and vehicles and led to school closures and major travel disruption also destroyed the water pipes in these villages when the Benamargosa river burst its banks.

The villages combined have a cosy population of around 3,500 inhabitants and were happy to see their water supply up and running on Thursday November 21. After rallying together as a community so inspiringly, getting running water back was the icing on the cake after weeks of unstable weather conditions.

Residents in Benamargosa reconnected to water supply last Monday.

Technicians from the area s public water company Axaragua, have managed to repair the damage to the pipes that run along the river bed from Benamargosa to the north. Residents in Benamargosa were reconnected last Monday.

All five villages had gone back to basics, receiving aid water via trucks with limited access to water for a few hours per day.

Floods damaged around fifty businesses and properties in Benamargosa

Patricia Navarro, spokesperson for the Junta de Andalucía in Málaga, visited Benamargosa, which was ravished by the floods, on Thursday November 21 to assess the damage caused to around fifty businesses and properties in the village’s lower region. Now, there is light at the end of the tunnel as many businesses have reopened and emergency work has been ongoing in Benamargosa.
