The province of Malaga has many secrets, but there is one that is more closely guarded than any other. The whereabouts of wild mushrooms.
In autumn in the mountainous and forested Malaga, you can ask any native Malagueño where they find their mushrooms, and they will never tell you or anyone. That’s a guarded secret passed on from parent to child as part of their inheritance.
This time of year provides the perfect conditions for mushrooms to grow, but finding the exact tree-covered spots in dense forests with precisely the right soil types, shade, humidity, and nutrients needs a little luck.
However, it is not impossible, and with an illustrated book on mycology, a day out mushroom hunting can bear some rewards. Humidity or rain at this time of year facilitates them coming out. The Montes of Málaga is where to look for niscalos (or saffron milk cap mushroom) which cost a small fortune in markets.
Where to find most wild mushrooms
One of the best environments, and one definitely for the more seasoned hikers, is the Sierra de las Nieves, a short drive from Marbella, where more than 400 varieties thrive. Some of them are sought-after varieties, like the parasol and the blue mushroom, both valuable additions to any high-end restaurant’s list of ingredients.
Júcar, in the Serranía de Ronda, is one of the richest areas for wild mushrooms. One mountain known as Lomas and Ferreiras has an abundance of the poplar mushroom, egg-yolk mushroom, red-hung amanita, pheasant, or chantarelle, among others.
Before picking any wild mushrooms, please check that it is actually legal to do so in that area, and always, without fail, check with an expert that they are actually safe for consumption because some can be lethal. Here s a useful guide to get you started.
