The Finnish National Rescue Association (SPEK) is worried about the fact that a recent survey indicated that as many as 75 per cent of young people charge their electronic devices while sleeping.
Although some media outlets had previously suggested that this was a safe practice, SPEK has made it clear during its Fire Safety Week campaign which started on November 23 that in fact to charge such items overnight is a significant fire risk.
Charging batteries at home overnight greatest cause of domestic fires
It has concluded that fires caused by electrical appliances are the most common type of household fire and incidents involving battery-powered devices appear to be generally on the rise.
Finnish Fire Safety Week aimed at young adults in first time properties
Fire Safety Week this year is aimed at young people moving into their own properties and is intended to warn them of all of the potential dangers caused by fire hazards as well as the need to not only install smoke detectors but also to have a plan for evacuation if the worst happens.
Whilst the dangers of candles is obvious, not everyone understands that charging electrical equipment whilst no-one is present is potentially highly dangerous.
Nearly 700 fires caused by electrical appliances occurred in Finland last year whilst in 2022 just 73 fires were linked to faults with batteries, a huge jump.
Charging electric bikes and e-scooters next to property exits is highly dangerous
Charging devices while sleeping is equally risky, as battery fires can ignite and spread quickly, often without enough time to detect the danger and although one tends to think of mobile phones and tablets, many people also charge e-scooters or electric bikes, often by entrances to their property which makes escape difficult.
