The Balearic Islands ranked as the sixth most popular Spanish destination for the week of October 7-13, accounting for 5.8-8.3 per cent of total bookings, according to the data sourced by booking platform TravelgateX. They were surpassed by Andalusia, Catalonia, the Canary Islands, Madrid, and Valencia.
Long stays versus brief getaways
The study shows a contrasting picture of booking trends for the Balearic Islands. Long-range bookings have fallen, with an overall 5.3% decline in bookings compared to the same period in 2023. However, there has been a late surge in British tourism, with bookings increasing by 27 per cent in the past week, likely driven by warm October weather with temperatures reaching 30ºC in Mallorca.
Travel Planning versus Spontaneous Travel
Booking trends highlight diverse travel planning preferences: 28.2% of bookings were made over three months in advance;12.6 per cent were made one to two months prior, and last-minute bookings accounted for 13.8 per cent, with many reservations made the day before or on the day of travel. This growing trend of spontaneous travel has fueled the recent surge in bookings, particularly among British tourists seizing late-season opportunities.
In the Balearic Islands short stays dominated, with 47.7-49.5 per cent of trips lasting two to five nights, underscoring the islands’ appeal as a destination for brief getaways. Domestic tourism continues to dominate, comprising 54-56 per cent of total bookings. However, among international visitors, British tourists led with 17-18%, followed by Germans (3%), North Americans (2.8-3.3%), and Chinese travelers (2.7%).
Despite a slow start to the season and mid-year declines in UK and domestic bookings, the recent spike in late bookings offers hope for recovery in 2024. But still, the seasonality of the islands remains a challenge. The islands are grappling with both declines in long-term bookings and a promising late surge driven by spontaneous British travelers.
