In a field near Kamień Pomorski in Poland, there has been a remarkable find – a 19th-century Japanese coin.
The discovery was announced by the Museum of the History of the Kamień Region on Sunday, November 24. Experts have shed light on some surprising historical connections between Europe and Japan.
How did an ancient Japanese coin end up in Poland?
The coin is a 100-mon piece dating back to 1835-1870. It was discovered by local resident Albert Murzynowski, who was intrigued by its unusual oblong shape and central square hole. Made of copper, lead, and tin alloy, this type of coin was once used extensively in Japan.
Despite Japan s nationalist policies during much of the 19th century, the museum noted that such coins occasionally made their way into international trade. Kamień Pomorski is situated on the Baltic coast and historically was a vital trade route, which may have played a role in the coin’s surprising journey.
The museum speculates that the coin could have been brought to the region by a European merchant, sailor, or traveller.
“This extraordinary discovery highlights the global connections that existed even in an era when the world appeared less interconnected than it is today,” the museum explained on social media.
The coin will undergo conservation before being permanently displayed in the museum.
This discovery offers a captivating glimpse into how trade and travel linked contrasting parts of the world.
