The podcasting world is growing by the day and Queen Mary of Denmark is about to enter with a mission to address a growing social concern – youth loneliness.
Her new three-part series, Lonely Youth , produced by her Mary Foundation, aims to shed light on the topic of loneliness by blending expert insights with personal stories from young people.
Youth loneliness is a national crisis in Denmark
The podcast comes in response to a 2023 Danish survey revealing that 73 per cent of 16-19-year-olds experience loneliness, whether alone or in company, and 17 per cent of 16-24-year-olds report feeling very lonely. Queen Mary expressed concern over the findings, describing them as “heavy numbers we must do something about.”
In a personal Instagram post, Queen Mary stated: “Through three short episodes, [the podcast] gives a thorough insight into the nuances of loneliness by mixing expertise and personal stories from young people.”
The series will be available on the Mary Foundation s website and other podcast platforms, with a release date yet to be announced.
The Mary Foundation
The Mary Foundation was established in 2007 using funds gifted by the people of Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands to celebrate Queen Mary’s wedding to King Frederik. The foundation focuses on tackling bullying, domestic violence, and loneliness, aiming to create a more inclusive society.
Queen Mary said: “Podcasting is not something we have much experience with at the Mary Foundation, but I hope you will listen and feel welcome.”
Podcasting: A royal trend?
Queen Mary joins a growing list of royals who have embraced podcasting to promote social causes. Meghan Markle’s ‘Archetypes’ explored labels placed on women, while Princess Eugenie’s ‘Floodlight’ tackles modern slavery. Queen Camilla’s ‘The Queen’s Reading Room’ podcast promotes the joys of reading.
Queen Mary and King Frederik’s new official portraits
The podcast announcement follows the release of new official portraits of Queen Mary and King Frederik. Queen Mary wore a minimalist white dress by Søren Le Schmidt, complemented by a subtle necklace with a letter ‘F’ pendant symbolising her bond with King Frederik.
